چکیده

RESUME In this paper, two different methods for fractional vegetation cover (FVC) retrieval from CHRIS (Compact High Resolution Imaging Spectrometer) data based on vegetation indices have been analyzed. The first method uses NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) values, as suggested, among others, by Carlson and Ripley (1997) and Gutman and Ignatov (1998), and the second method uses VARI (Variable Atmospherically Resistant Index) values as suggested by Gitelson et al. (2002). In addition, a simple Spectral Mixture Analysis has been also carried out in order to obtain the fractional vegetation cover. The different methods have been tested using vegetation cover values obtained from hemispherical photographs. All methods provide differences with in situ values lower than 15%. The methods based on the VARI and the spectral mixture analysis show the best results, with differences lower than 10%. Substantial angular effects for the different view zenith angles of CHRIS acquisitions have not been found. The fractional vegetation cover has been used in order to obtain land surface emissivity maps with a very simplified approximation, which is only valid for flat surfaces because it does not take into account the cavity effect. In this way, land surface emissivity, which is a parameter used when working with thermal infrared data, can be retrieved from sensors with no available thermal bands.

Comparison Between Fractional Vegetation Cover Retrievals from Vegetation Indices and Spectral Mixture Analysis: Case Study of PROBA/CHRIS Data Over an Agricultural Area

In this paper we compare two different methodologies for Fractional Vegetation Cover (FVC) retrieval from Compact High Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (CHRIS) data onboard the European Space Agency (ESA) Project for On-Board Autonomy (PROBA) platform. The first methodology is based on empirical approaches using Vegetation Indices (VIs), in particular the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (...

An Improvement on Land Surface Temperature Determination by Producing Surface Emissivity Maps

Emissivity mapping of the Earth’s surface is the prerequisite to thermal remote sensing. A precise determinationof a surface's temperature is dependent upon the availability of precise emissivity data for that surface. The presentstudy area is a part of sugarcane plantation fields in the west part of Khuzestan province. In this work, TemperatureEmissivity Separation algorithm (TES) was applied ...

سنجش اثرات سبزینگی گیاهی در تحولات فضایی شدت جزیره حرارتی سطح کلانشهر تهران با استفاده از تصاویر ماهواره‌ای LANDSAT8 و ASTER

The simplest definition of urbanization is that urbanization is the process of becoming urban. Urban climate is defined by specific climate conditions which differ from surrounding rural areas. Urban areas, for example, have higher temperatures than surrounding rural areas and weaker winds. Land Surface Temperature is an important phenomenon in global climate change. As the green house gases in...

Directional sensitivity analysis of vegetation indices from multi-angular CHRIS/PROBA data

View angle effects present in vegetation indices are either being seen as unwanted information or as an additional source of information. However, the magnitude of these angular effects remains for most indices unknown. We use the ESA-mission CHRISPROBA (Compact High Resolution Imaging Spectrometer–Project for On-board Autonomy) providing spaceborne imaging spectrometer and multidirectional dat...

Land-surface emissivity maps based on MSG/SEVIRI information

Retrieval of land-surface temperature (LST) using data from MSG/SEVIRI requires adequate estimates of land-surface emissivity (LSE). In this context LSE maps for SEVIRI channels IR3.9, IR8.7, IR10.8, and IR12.0 were developed based on the vegetation cover method. A broadband LSE map (3-14 μm) was also developed for estimating long-wave surface fluxes that may prove to be useful in both energy b...
